Light It Up! Was conceived during my first Global Game Jam. The theme was “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are”.
Imagine you wake up in the middle of the night and need to go to the toilet. Of course the light doesn’t work. You’re left with no choice but to feel your way to the bathroom. As you walk toward the toilet, a few leaves brush up against your legs and for a split second, you jolt in uncertainty. You’ve watched too many horror movies as a child and instantly assumed the worst. Adrenaline kick starts your brain and you realise that you’re safe at home. Your muscles relax and you’re relieved that the mental burden did not linger. So what happened? You were afraid, until you were made aware of your situation. Realisation of your context changed your mental and physical state.
Light It Up! is my attempt at recreating this feeling. You start off in a dark place, with little information about your surroundings. Where do you go? What do you do? These answers might be explained once you’ve gathered more information about your surroundings. But be careful, you never know what you’re going to get.
This version of Light It Up! is currently a toy and has no end goal. It’s simply something I found intriguing to make. The simulation ends once you get past the blue door.
